A vacuum is an essential part of your cleaning kit. Powerful suction can pick up dirt and debris you never even knew was there, which is a relief in these times when we’re all a bit more germ-conscious.
When choosing which type of vacuum is right for you, consider what kind of messes tend to build up in your home. Do you have pets? Do you have kids? Do you have hardwood floors or mostly carpeting?

Here are a few favorites, in stock right now.
1. Shark NV352 Navigator Lift Away
Our favorite affordable upright vacuum cleaner is the Shark NV352. Thanks to its swivel joint brush head, it can twist and turn to navigate around furniture with ease. It has a small brush head to reach the tightest of corners and includes various attachments.
Just note that the attachments can’t be used unless the canister is detached from the motor, which means you’ll have to carry around the canister as you use the Shark’s Lift-Away feature. If you don’t mind hauling it around by hand then this will do an impressive job at letting you access stairs and even furniture.
2. Dyson V15 Detect
The most frustrating part of vacuuming is the constant struggle with the cord to keep it plugged into the right spot so it can reach exactly where you need it.
This is where our favorite cordless vacuum, the new Dyson V15 Detect comes in. It has a powerful battery, so it lasts longer than other models while working hard to clean the floors. This Dyson features a dust-eliminating laser to improve its cleaning prowess.
3. Miele Complete C3 Kona
Canister vacuums, which require an old-school style vacuum bag, may seem like a thing of the past. However, these models have serious cleaning power.
Our favorite model is the Miele Complete C3 Kona, which is exceptionally built. It’s sturdy, and it shows no signs of wobbly or cheap pieces. This does mean the machine has a higher price tag, but it does a superb job of cleaning and capturing dirt, making this a choice model for allergy sufferers who want a serious clean.
4. Craftsman 12004
A wet/dry vacuum can clean up the nastiest of messes in your home. By design, they pick up water, debris, and dirt. We’ve tested out all the best models, and the Craftsman 12004 is our favorite.
This vacuum picks up messes quickly while still being thorough. It doesn’t offer a wide array of attachments, but it does provide a floor squeegee, extension wands, and a utility nozzle.
This vacuum is made for families who need to clean up heavy duty messes or for the craftsman (like it says in the name!) who has a shop that needs tidying. Oh, and did we mention it’s super affordable? Coming in under $75, this powerful vacuum won’t falter.
5. Miele U1 Upright Cat & Dog
Our favorite upright vacuum—that also happens to be our favorite vacuum for wood floors—is the Miele U1 Cat & Dog. This machine is built to last. You’ll see that it is steep in price, but you won’t be looking for another vacuum for years to come after purchasing this machine.
This Miele features weights that prevent it from tipping over, say, as you use hose to stretch into tough spots. It also has a swivel joint that allows it to move easily in whatever direction that you need it to. That’s also why we love it for hardwood floors as it won’t slip or scratch the surface.
6. VacMaster Wet/dry vac
Your vacuum can multitask for you, and the VacMaster wet/dry vac certainly wants to!
With a 12-gallon basin, this vacuum cleans up the biggest of messes in and outside of your home.
It has a variety of eight attachments, including a crevice device that cleans your car in no time—especially after a big road trip with a car full of kids. One of our favorite features is the detachable motor that you can hook up in the backyard and have an instant leaf blower.
7. Tineco A10 Hero
A super affordable, but still high performing, cordless option is the Tineco A10 Hero. It works well at picking up dirt, and we like the LED lights on the brush head that helps reach hard to see places like under the couch.
It has a battery life that lasts from 7 minutes on max power to 14 minutes on regular. This may be where the Tineco has a one up on other cordless options—the Tineco comes with backup batteries so that you can swap out a freshly charged battery so you can clean the whole house without pause.
8. Shark NV752 Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet
There’s no denying that a home with pets is a happy one. Sometimes though it can feel like your pets are overrunning your home with mud, litter box dust, dander, and so much pet hair. To take care of these messes, a specialized vacuum is key to staying ahead.
The Shark NV52 TruePet vacuum is our top pick for taking care of pet hair. It keeps your whole home clean with its Lift-Away feature that lets you remove the canister from the motor base so you can vacuum up a set of stairs or in small spaces, like around a litter box or feeding area.
9. LG Cordzero A9
If you want both the perk of taking care of pet hair with the additional benefit of having a cordless vacuum, then the LG Cordzero A9 is the best option we can find.
This model stands out with its special attachments, which includes a vibrating hose head that sucks up all the pet hair in your upholstery or carpets you never knew was there.
Plus, since the aptly named Cordzero is cordless, you can take it out to the car to clean those car seats you never thought could be rid of the smells, treat crumbs, and hair. It also features a brush roll that is ultra soft and won’t scratch your hardwood floors, but does a better job at cleaning up pet hair than sweeping can.
10. Eufy RoboVac 11s
Robot vacuums are perfect for an on-the-go person who finds it hard to set aside time to clean house every week. The 11s is a sleek model that quietly zips around cleans your home whether you’re home or not.
We love this model for its price—you seriously can’t beat its under $200 price tag—as well as strong suction and navigation skills. This model picks up enough dirt to rival the top-of-the line iRobot models, just at a more affordable price.
11. iRobot Roomba i7+
iRobot leads robot vacuum technology and the i7+ shows off why. This model is one of the first that empties itself, meaning you truly will never have to lift a finger when putting it to use.
This Roomba has powerful lifting technology that takes care of anything in its path. Through an app, you can control what rooms in your home you want the vacuum to focus on. We’re so impressed by its power and features that it makes the high price worth it. Plus, it’s on sale now!
12. Neato Botvac D7 Connected
For both pet hair and robot vacuum technology, we look to the Neato Botvac D7. It has a D-shaped design that can go tight against the walls of your home to never miss the corners where pet hair tends to collect.
It goes over hardwood and carpet with ease. This vacuum does a nice job of collecting pet hair without getting clogged, so it will do an unstoppable job at cleaning. If you have furniture that runs close to the ground beware of the Neato getting stuck; it stands at 4 inches tall and may not clear everywhere it wants to go.
Luckily, you can avoid a crash or a jam with Neato’s technology that allows you to block off certain areas like pet food and water dishes or low-to-the-ground furniture.
